Hey Impact Family and Friends,
Let’s be real—this time of year can test your boundaries like nothing else. Saying “no” to family or friends? Not easy. Whether it’s:
- Turning down that extra plate of food at holiday dinners,
- Skipping late-night drinks so you can crush it the next day, or
- Declining plans to prioritize rest and recovery…
…it can feel like a challenge to protect your time, energy, and routines.
I get it. For years, I struggled to say “no” to the endless holiday snacks and drinks. Family gatherings were a free-for-all, and I’d end up overindulging, feeling tired and sluggish. It took me a while to realize that sacrificing how I felt for temporary pleasures just wasn’t worth it.
If this resonates with you, trust me—you’re not alone. But here’s the truth: enjoying the holiday season doesn’t mean abandoning your goals.
Step Into the Season with Balance
Start by getting clear on your non-negotiables (the things you absolutely won’t compromise on) and where you can be flexible. For example:
- Maybe staying active 3x a week is a non-negotiable…But you can adjust your workouts to shorter sessions when time is tight.
- Maybe avoiding certain foods that don’t make you feel good is a must…But you can allow yourself to enjoy a few treats that align with your goals.
- Maybe getting 7–8 hours of sleep is essential for you…But you’re willing to plan one or two late nights for special gatherings.
The key is balance. Make room for joy while honoring what helps you feel your best.
Master the Art of Saying “No” (Without Guilt)
If you struggle with setting boundaries, here are some ways to communicate with kindness and confidence:
- “I’d love to, but I need to take care of a few things first. Let’s catch up soon!”
- “That looks amazing, but it doesn’t agree with me—thanks for understanding!”
- “I’m heading out early tonight so I can start tomorrow strong.”
- “I’d love to join, but I need some time to recharge. Let’s plan something soon!”
- “This looks great, but I’m going to pass for now.”
Remember: setting boundaries isn’t about saying “no” to others—it’s about saying “yes” to YOU.
The Joy of the Season Includes You, Too
The holidays are about joy, connection, and celebrating the people you care about. And guess what? That includes you.
Honoring your needs, sticking to your priorities, and allowing yourself flexibility where it makes sense are all part of showing up as your best self—for you and everyone around you.
You’ve got this!
