Hey Impact Family and Friends,

How often do you catch yourself saying, “I HAVE to work out” or “I HAVE to eat better this week”? It’s such a common mindset when we’re trying to build new habits, and I totally get it. When I first started focusing on my health, I found myself thinking those exact things. I was motivated to feel stronger and more confident in my body, but it all felt like a chore. Every workout, every meal prep session, every time I tried to do something outside my comfort zone—it felt like a grind.

Guess what? That’s completely natural.

Our brains are hardwired to seek comfort and routine, and any time we introduce something new—especially something challenging—our brains resist it. That’s when the “I HAVE to” thoughts start to creep in.

A Mindset Shift That Changes Everything

One simple shift transformed my approach: instead of saying “I HAVE to,” I started saying “I GET to.”

  • “I GET to work out” reminded me of my body’s incredible capabilities.
  • “I GET to prepare my meals” became an opportunity to fuel myself for success.
  • “I GET to practice self-care” felt like a gift to my future self, not a task on my to-do list.

This shift from obligation to opportunity rewired the way I viewed healthy habits. Suddenly, they weren’t things I was forcing myself to do—they became things I was choosing to do because they made me feel better, stronger, and more in control of my life.

Why This Works

This isn’t just about feeling better in the moment—it’s about sending the right message to yourself. When you reframe your mindset, you start seeing these habits as privileges, not punishments.

Here’s why this mindset shift matters:

  • It Builds Gratitude: When you see habits as something you “get to” do, you appreciate what your body and mind are capable of. Gratitude keeps you grounded and motivated.
  • It Shifts Focus to the Positive: Instead of focusing on what you’re giving up (like time or energy), you focus on what you’re gaining—health, strength, and confidence.
  • It Creates Excitement: You’re not just checking boxes—you’re creating a life that aligns with your goals and values.
  • It Encourages Consistency: When habits feel like privileges, they’re easier to stick with, even when life gets hectic.

What Does This Mean for You?

This week, I challenge you to shift your mindset and reframe the way you approach your habits. Instead of thinking about what you have to do, focus on what you get to do.

Here are a few questions to help you get started:

  • What habits are you practicing this week that will make your life better?
  • How do those habits make you feel about yourself?
  • What benefits are you already noticing?

Write them down, reflect on them, or hit reply and share them with me—I’d love to hear what’s working for you!

Remember: Your Mind Is Your Power

Getting your mind right is about more than just motivation. It’s about sending yourself the right message:

  • “I’m worth the effort.”
  • “My goals matter.”
  • “I’m capable of doing hard things.”

When you start believing those things, resistance fades, and progress becomes natural. You’ve got this—keep showing up for yourself.

Committed to your success,

Coach Peter
