Hey Impact Family and Friends,
The other day, Coach Tiff, Zach, and I were deep in conversation about something that drives everything we do at Impact: not majoring in the minor. It’s easy to get lost in the weeds of details that don’t move the needle. But at the end of the day, our focus is simple: helping you perform better, feel better, and reduce your risk of injury.
Here’s the thing—getting people out of pain and reducing injury risk are two very different goals.
- Injuries need to heal. Tissue damage takes time, rest, and care.
- Pain, on the other hand, is often unlearned. It’s a complex web of how your body moves, compensates, and adapts to various stresses.
When it comes to progressing, we also need to be mindful of timing and adaptations. Yes, progressive overload and proper stimuli are critical, but they only work if we apply them intelligently. That means moving through phases deliberately: passive → active assistance → active → active resistance.
What Does That Look Like in Action?
Take a simple dead bug, for example.
- It’s a fantastic exercise for someone who has zero sense of proprioception—someone just learning to connect their brain to their body.
- But if you’ve been training with us for a month, lying on the floor and aligning your ribcage and pelvis should be second nature.
If it’s not, that’s okay—it just means we need to look deeper. That’s not the “major”; it’s a clue.
Maybe the root issue is:
- The anterior hip capsule driving your pelvis into an anterior tilt.
- A breathing pattern that needs refinement.
- Weak hamstrings, which are critical for restoring ribcage-pelvis reactivity. Activating and strengthening the hamstrings can help anchor the pelvis in a more neutral position, allowing better core engagement and overall stability.
- Or maybe it’s time to scale up to an anterior core exercise with active resistance—something that challenges you with more load and demands.
Outperforming Poor Structure
Here’s the bottom line: when we train, we’re not looking for shortcuts. Outperforming poor structure takes:
- A keen eye: We need to see beyond the obvious and identify the real root causes.
- Critical thinking: What’s limiting your performance? Is it strength, mobility, or something deeper?
- Quick problem-solving: Time is valuable, and we want to address issues efficiently to keep you progressing.
Opportunity Cost
Every session we spend spinning our wheels on minor issues is a session lost. That’s why Coach Peter, our team, and I are relentless in finding the most effective path forward. We’re constantly balancing the opportunity cost of sticking with one approach versus pivoting to a better one.
How to Keep Progressing
To make your training optimal and results-driven, here are a few takeaways:
- Progress Intelligently: Move through phases deliberately—passive → active assistance → active → active resistance. Don’t jump steps, but don’t linger too long in the basics either.
- Chase Load Where It Counts: Once you have the basics down, scale up. Your body adapts to challenges, so don’t be afraid to increase resistance and complexity.
- Focus on Integration: The ribcage, pelvis, hips, and core all work together. Solve the root cause of an issue, not just the symptoms. Don’t forget the power of the hamstrings—they can be game-changing in restoring balance between the pelvis and ribcage.
- Stay Curious: If something isn’t clicking, don’t get stuck—keep searching for answers. That’s how breakthroughs happen.
